How to Treat Acne with Hydrocortisone

Acne can affect any part of the body. Although it's most common in teenagers due to hormonal changes and diet, it can also affect adults. Pregnancy, hormonal fluctuations and medications are factors responsible for acne in adults. Regardless of age, acne sufferers experience the same emotional distress and self-esteem problems. On the positive side, though, there are a number of treatments available on the market. One common treatment is hydrocortisone, which is available in creams, lotions, gels and sprays. However, it's important to treat acne correctly in order to see results.

1. • 1Wash your face or the affected area with warm water and a mild soap. Pat the skin dry with a clean towel.

     Wet the affected area with warm water and massage an exfoliating scrub into the skin to open up the pores and remove dead skin cells. Rinse skin clean with warm water and pat dry with a clean towel. Do this two or three times per week.

     Apply a small amount of hydrocortisone cream, lotion, or gel directly on the cyst or pimple. Rub it in with your fingers and gently work it into the skin. Treat the acne twice daily. Hydrocortisone reduces inflammation and redness and relieves itching. You can find the cream in over-the-counter strength. It is also available by prescription if you need a stronger product.

     If you're using hydrocortisone spray, shake the container and hold it about 4 inches away from the affected area. Spray continuously for approximately two seconds. Protect your eyes if you apply the spray to your face.

     Do not allow the treated area to come into contact with water until the medication dries.

     Reduce the dosage if the acne worsens, as hydrocortisone can worsen the condition in some patients.
